THE WAR ARTIST
Three characters, all soldiers in the New Zealand Division in France in 1918. The play focuses on the creation of the painting Burial Party at Bellevue near Solesme by George Edmund Butler. Butler was the New Zealand army’s first official war artist. The War Artist explores ideas around the validity of creating art in the face of war, and the solace to be found in the rites of burial.
